New York Hockey in the 1930s

Raymond A. Sprague and the Sands Point Tigers

Pooh Sprague recalls his dad’s time playing in the “dark leagues” of semi-pro hockey during the 1930s. At the time when Ray Sprague played in goal for the Sands Point Tigers out of Port Washington, New York, his day job was working on Wall Street. Ray made a point to fill his off-the-clock hours with outdoor activities, as he would all his life.

Some outside links to explore:

  • On this Sands Point roster, Ray is listed as playing from 1938—40.

  • A 1938 program has the Tigers playing against the New York Stock Brokers in Madison Square Garden.
